Verstappen steals pole position from Norris at Monza

The four-time champion will start ahead of Norris and Oscar Piastri, both from McLaren.

Max Verstappen has claimed his first pole position since the British Grand Prix after winning qualifying at the Monza circuit ahead of tomorrow afternoon's Italian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver, the reigning four-time Formula 1 world champion, dramatically overtook Lando Norris, who had the best pace in the last two practice sessions. Norris' McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri was third. Verstappen came first by setting a new lap record in Monza and posting the fastest lap by average speed in F1 history.

Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also made it into the top 10. That top 10 included George Russell and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull). Hamilton will effectively start from tenth position tomorrow due to the five-place grid penalty he received in the Netherlands.

The Italian Grand Prix in Monza is tomorrow, September 7 at 16:00 Bulgarian time. Verstappen will be fighting for a third victory since the start of the season after those in Japan and Italy (Emilia-Romagna). | BGNES
