The Bulgarian national volleyball team started with a victory at the World Cup in the Philippines. The team, led by Gianlorenzo Blenghini, defeated Germany 3:0 (40:38, 25:22, 25:20) in its first match in Group E of the World Cup.
The Bulgarian team started the match well and gradually built up an advantage to lead by 17:11. However, a sharp decline followed, and the Germans scored 6 consecutive points to equalize. Bulgaria again took the advantage at 23:21, but again allowed an equalizer. Drama and a game of nerves followed, with both teams missing a number of chances to close the game. Alexander Nikolov played very strongly for Bulgaria in these minutes, scoring most of the points for the team. The problem for Bulgaria was in the reception, as well as in the series of service errors - as many as 17 in the first game. However, after a new attack by Alex Nikolov, our team won the game with 40:38, a World Championship record.
In the second game, the Bulgarian volleyball players significantly reduced their service errors. The attack continued to be flawless, and Bulgaria took the lead with 15:11. Bulgaria maintained its lead, and did not let it go until the end and categorically took the game.
In the third game, Bulgaria started very well again. The strong play in attack continued, and the national team again gained a lead and increased it. Bulgaria led with 16:13 at the second technical break. The difference jumped to 21:16, and until the end the Bulgarian team did not lose its lead.
