The legend of world tennis and Serbian sports – Novak Djokovic – is determined to leave his homeland. The superstar has taken drastic measures for his entire family after being labeled a traitor by President Aleksandar Vučić due to his support for protests in the country.
According to the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Djokovic has decided to leave Belgrade with his family and relocate to Athens. The Serbian has already enrolled his two children – Stefan and Tara – in an English-language school in the Greek capital, while the prestigious southern district of the city, Glyfada, will welcome the Serbians.
Moreover, Djokovic has decided to move his tournament, which was traditionally held in Belgrade. The competition will now take place in Athens, marking the last tournament the Serbian will participate in for the remainder of the year.
There is also a possibility that Nole might test his skills at the season-ending Masters in Turin, but it is still unclear whether the world No. 3 will choose to compete in Italy.
For more than 10 months, Serbia has been engulfed by the largest protests in its history. The trigger was the collapse of the train station canopy in Novi Sad on November 1, which claimed the lives of 16 people. Protesters blame Aleksandar Vučić’s corrupt regime for the poor-quality repair of the canopy. In recent months, incidents of police violence against protesters have become increasingly brutal and frequent. | BGNES
